Paul M. Grist State Park

Set around a 100-acre lake, Grist State Park is a serene woodland setting. The park has sites for both primitive and RV camping, and the lake is stocked with bass, bluegill, sunfish and catfish for anglers. The park is located just outside of Selma on Highway 22 East.

Chewacla State Park

Chewacla's facilities include 696 scenic acres for hiking, camping, and picnicking. Their 26-acre lake allows for boating, swimming and fishing. Conveniently located south of Auburn off I-85, Chewacla offers a convenient getaway.

Lakepoint Resort State Park

Located on the banks of 45,000-acre Lake Eufaula, this park has a lodge, a convention center, campgrounds, cabins, lakeside cottages, picnic areas, an 18-hole golf course, and a marina for all visitors that includes launch facilities and boat slips.

Frank Jackson State Park

For those who love fishing, this 2050-acre park serves as the premier fishing destination with its 1000-acre stream-fed lake. Lake Jackson is great for swimming, and the park includes shoreline picnic areas, lakefront camping sites with cable TV hookups, and a modern bathhouse.

Roland Cooper State Park

Set along the Dannelly Reservoir near Camden, this 226-acre state park offers a nine-hole golf course with a clubhouse, vacation cottages, campgrounds with bathhouses, laundry facilities, a camp store, scenic picnic area with tables, and ample fishing opportunities in the reservoir.

Montgomery Zoo

Montgomery Zoo spreads across over 40 acres of land, and features over 700 animals from 5 different continents. The zoo houses exotic wildlife and endangered species in "barrier free" habitats. The free flight aviary allows visitors to see a variety of South American tropical birds up close in full flying glory. A miniature train snakes through the zoo grounds, affording passengers views not possible from the walking paths.

Adventureland Theme Park

This Dothan theme park is open 365 days a year and has no admission fees. Attractions at the park include miniature golf, go-karts, batting cages, bumper boats, and full arcade.

Surfside Water Park

Surfside Water Park has a 450,000-gallon wave pool, a river that winds throughout the park, four body flumes, two speed slides, and a 5000 sq. ft. kiddies area. For a break from the water, the park also includes covered pavilions, volleyball court, concession stands and a gift shop.

Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site

The Tuskegee Institute served not only as a center for educating freed slaves and their children, but also became a beacon of hope for all African Americans in the decades after emancipation. Officially opened on July 4 1881 as the Tuskegee Normal School with Booker T. Washington as its first principal, the original buildings were built by the students themselves with bricks made in the Institute's brickyard. Today the original institute is a national historic site located on the campus of modern-day Tuskegee University, and includes the George Washington Carver Museum.

Old Alabama Town

Old Alabama Town is the South's premier historic village. The Town features over 40 restored 19th and 20th century structures, all of which stretch along six blocks in downtown Montgomery. Visitors can relive and experience the lives of those who settled and developed the area.

The Selma to Montgomery National historic Trail

In March of 1965, thousands of civil rights advocates marched through rain and cold for five days and four nights on a 54-mile trek to the state capitol. The demonstration, a push for to end the disenfranchisement of African Americans, stands as a triumph of the Civil Rights Movement. Trail markers and several walking tours trace the route of one of the most important political marches in American history.

Built in 1906, this beautiful mansion that blends colonial and Greek revival architecture has been home to the Governor of Alabama since 1950.

Hunting & Fishing

The river woodlands and hilltop fields of the region beckon outdoor enthusiasts of every kind. From east to west, the River Heritage region offers abundant opportunities for both hunting and fishing.

Quick Drop Hunting 

Quick Drop Hunting provides a "fair chase" environment for deer and turkey hunting with a nice combination of shooting houses, tripods and ladder stands. The terrain includes rolling hills, pines, hardwood forest, and farmland. Hunters sleep in a cozy three bedroom camp house with satellite television, fireplace, dining area, large kitchen, and bathroom with shower. Quick drop Hunting is located in Fitzpatrick, a short drive southeast of Montgomery. 


White Oak Plantation 

White Oak Plantation is a premier hunting resort set along Opintlocco Creek in south central Alabama. The terrain itself is a refreshing mix of densely forested bottomlands to undulating hills of crops and wooded thickets. The resorts commitment to a family atmosphere is just one of the reasons they offer a number of outdoor activities such as bird watching, nature hikes and bass fishing. The comfortable accommodations include pleasant sleeping rooms, a full service family-style dining room and a deluxe trophy lounge that can comfortably accommodate 200. White Oak can be found outside of Tuskegee, Alabama.

MainLand Hunting 

Just Southeast of Montgomery in Union Springs, MainLand Hunting delivers an experience with whitetail deer and wild boar. Hunting on the land has been carefully limited over time in a concerted plan of proper wildlife management. If hunters require transportation, MainLand Hunting can pick you up from the Montgomery Airport or nearby Franklin Field.

Pike County State Public Fishing Lake 

Pike County Lake is a 45-acre lake located near Troy. This lake is a great place to fish for bass year-round, though the best period is from late winter to early spring. Fishermen can also find bluegill, redear sunfish, catfish, and crappie. The Lake is open from sunrise to sunset and is wheelchair accessible.

Lee County State Public Fishing Lake 

Located six miles southeast of Opelika, Lee County Lake is a 130 acre lake perfect for anglers of all skill level. The lake is stocked with bass, bluegill, shellcracker, catfish and crappie. A launching ramp is available for boat fishing, and boats are also available for rental. A fishing pier makes deeper water fishing accessible to all. The park also features concessions, a bait and tackle shop and rental cabins.

Spectator Sports

Some of the best spectator sports in the entire state can be found on our college campuses, as our universities field top-level competition regardless of their size. In addition to collegiate athletics, a number of other sporting events draw fans around the region.


VictoryLand Greyhound Racing

In addition to live greyhound racing 52 weeks per year, Victoryland offers a full simulcast schedule of race and sporting events from around the nation. The track holds over 200 simulcast races on Saturday alone. The track is easy to find, located on I-85 between Montgomery and Tuskegee. You must be at least 19 years old to visit Victoryland.

Eagle Stadium

Built in 1946, this historic stadium housed Ozark's professional baseball teams from 1946-1952. Today, high school, college, and Dixie Major games are held at the stadium. Eagle Stadium is also the site of the exhibition game between St. Louis Cardinals and Ozark's all-star team.

East Alabama Motor Speedway

A rally-style racetrack, the East Alabama Motor Speedway supports six classes of championship stock car racing as well as demolition derbies. The East Alabama Motor Speedway also hosts the annual Alabama 500 State Championships.

Montgomery Motorsports Park

The Montgomery Motorsports Park hosts a variety of races in numerous classes, including super-pro and drag racing. The site also frequently hosts car shows and classic car competitions.

World Championship Rodeo/Livestock Exposition

Some of the nation's top riders and wranglers make their appearance at this excellent rodeo every April. This annual event is held at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery. You can also view the Southeastern Livestock Exposition, a regional farm animal exhibition held in conjunction with the rodeo.

Golf

The rolling topography, majestic cypress trees and winding rivers of the region make for a perfect golf setting. Whether you love links play or are more comfortable with championship golf, you are sure to find more than a few courses nearby that far exceed your expectations. A few local favorites:


Auburn Links at Mill Creek

The 18 holes of par 72-golf at Auburn Links play with a championship yardage just over 71,000. One of the more popular courses in the area, Auburn Links features traditional bent grass greens.

Dothan National Golf Club & Hotel

Dothan National's Bob Simmons-designed course is a tree-lined 18-hole tract that is suitable for players of all ages and levels of experience. Conveniently located near theaters, shopping malls, and recreational historic parks, the club includes a lighted driving range, hotel, restaurant and lounge, an Olympic size outdoor pool and conference facilities.

River Run Golf Course

River Run's greens tend towards the receptive side, open landing areas helping players set up their approach shots. Some of the course's36 holes, however, do require precision shot-making to weave through tree-lined fairways and around well-placed hazards. River Run's facilities include a pro shop, bar and grill, driving range, and both putting and chipping green. The course is located Dozier Road in Montgomery.

Capitol Hill

Part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail collection of courses that are spread across the state, the three 18's at Capitol Hill each promise a challenging and breathtaking round of golf for the adventurous. The Senator is a Scottish-links style course that is broken by more than 150 bunkers and earthen mounds 30 to 40 feet in height. The Legislator is a more traditional championship-style layout that plays alongside a high bluff and the down into cypress low grounds. The Judge uses 200 acres of the Alabama River as its majestic backdrop. 14 of its 18 holes adjoin water and many boast views of the Montgomery skyline.

Auburn University

One of the largest universities in the South, Auburn has a tradition of academic excellence and progressive leadership. The university was established as a small all-male college in 1856, just 20 years after the city of Auburn's founding. The main campus now has a student body of over 20,000, and the Montgomery branch campus opened in 1967 now has more than 5,000 students. Today the university offers degrees from 13 schools and colleges at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.

Troy University

Originally a state teacher's college, Troy has developed into a state University system with campuses in Troy, Dothan, Phenix Cityand Montgomery. The main campus of Troy University (the school dropped the "State" from their name in 2005) offers has five main colleges: arts and sciences, business, communication & fine arts, education and health & human services.

Alabama State University

Alabama State University offers a variety of baccalaureate and master's degree programs from their campus in Montgomery. ASU's main goals are quality instruction, dedicated research and continued public service.

Tuskegee University

One of the nation's most historically and socially significant educational institutions, Tuskegee University was established by state legislature in 1880 as a school for the black population. In the years since, Tuskegee has earned a reputation not only as an outstanding academic university but also as a highly influential force on the race as a whole. While primarily focusing on development of the African American community, the university is open to all and supports a student body that is racially, ethnically and religiously diverse. Located in the city of Tuskegee, the university offers 49 degrees from 5 colleges.
